Another Thought About Do-It-Yourselfers - AKA McFisbos By Steven Husak
|
We are all 'victims' of the information age.
Just last week a customer came into Baer's Furniture in Sarasota, FL very excited to transform her dining room into a 'Country French' look. She knew exactly what she wanted, had seen it on one of those do-it-yourself decorating shows on TV. She was referred to me by her neighbor, she loved what I did in her neighbor's home, Asian Contemporary.
After I showed her several Country French style dining rooms in the showroom and catalogs I was abruptly informed that I simply didn't know what I was talking about. I guess 27 years of experience in the industry hasn't taught me what 'Country French' means. She proceeded to take me over to an 'Old Havana' style dining room in very dark mahogany to show me what 'Country French' is, plus also pointed out a couple of Mediterranean style sets.
She also bought a dining room, a very handsome sale. She got what she wanted. But it wasn't Country or French. You can see the photo below.
So what's my point?
Well, these same folks are buying books, watching reality TV shows, scouring the Internet to become 'experts' in everything.
Interior Design. Real Estate. Clairvoyance. Emergency surgery. Cooking. Flower arranging. Catching criminals and cheating spouses.
Even OJ Simpson has gotten into the act doing his own 'sting' operation!
What's next, brain surgery? So we've gone from the age of specialization to the age of anybody can do it mediocrity.
Wait until next week when a watcher of Dr. 90210 comes into your office with her do it yourself face lift, slightly overdone...with her boobs on her forehead. She'll ask to cancel her listing agreement with you because she learned how to sell her home on TV!
